Beach Hair 101: Locks To Give

Braids, waves, ponytails, and messy buns. There are so many fun tips and tricks out there for those of us who have a simple, often taken for granted asset, our long hair.

Recently my close friend’s daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and after brain surgery and round 1 of vigorous chemo, she sat on daddy’s lap while they played “Beauty Salon” and shaved her head. She is 4.

Her response the next day to her mom… “Mom, we can’t be twins anymore.” The tears were flowing when I read the story.

If I ever hear that she is missing her pigtails or braids (right now her main focus is getting through constant vomiting and chemo), you can bet I’ll run to the nearest salon and figure out a way to donate my hair. I’ve got the luxury now of knowing it will grow back.

So, if anyone is wanting to help brighten a cancer patients day or an amazing excuse to finally try out that bob or pixie, please check out Locks of Love, Pantene Beautiful Lengths, or Wigs for Kids. In general, hair needs to be 8-12 inches long, kept in a neat ponytail or braid, and in good condition.

Not able to donate your hair, or can’t make the cut? The organizations above all accept financial donations and some have sponsorship programs.

Now, here’s the ultimate heart warmer. My friend’s daughter recently received a box of headbands from a non-profit called Abigail’s Balding Beauties. It brightened up her day to receive them, but what gave her the most joy was being able to share them and hand out headbands to the other kids in the hospital.

Now, that’s way more beautiful than a bunch of long wavy locks any day.
