Nestled just off of Front Street in Lahaina is a little coffee shop that (in my opinion) is the kind of cafe that a coffee lover’s dreams are made of. Yes, I might be biased because the owner is my friend. But, she happens to be French, is picky with her aesthetic and coffee, has impeccable taste, and just knows how to make something laid back yet chic.
I’m talking about Belle Surf Cafe. I FINALLY stepped foot in it and c’était merveilleux.
I never made it to the previous Kihei location, but this one has a little indoor cafe and shop where even the espresso machine itself is gorgeous. Then, outside has this earthy breezy vibe, some plants, and it’s just the type of place I’d sit for hours and drink way too much coffee, then read a book or journal. But in all honestly I was headed out to surf, so breakfast and coffee it was.
Crepes and cappuccino. Yum. Although in hindsight I should’ve gotten one of the drinks with the lavendar syrup from Provence. Next time.
It was DELICIOUS, and the vibe was amazing. It’s beachy retro french chic (there I finally described it) and it’s pretty much the antithesis of Starbucks or Caribou or Peets…or…there are so many chains now.
Ok, the options: food, smoothies, coffee, tea, iced stuff, hot & frothy sips, avo toast, fruit-filled or savory crepes, the latest buzz drinks, or just a good ol cup o’ jo.
It’s also a great place to find a unique gift: ceramics (I found the most amazing Black Mountain Ceramics mugs), local artists, tees, and some watercolors by yours truly (Belle Surf is my first retailer #shamelessselfpromotion).
The cute pup, Maile, who hangs on the patio is an added perk too.
So, after designing the logo for Belle Surf a little over four years ago, seeing the sign on Front street nestled in some palms, setting foot in it in person, and having it just be an awesome place…well, it was this coffee-loving artist’s dream come true.
All of my personal artistic connections aside, It’s really a special spot. With some damn good coffee.
So, If I ever do a Maui travel guide, or if anyone is looking for recs, Belle Surf is definitely on the list.
