RX Bikini Bod: Floating Yoga. AKA Flo-yo.

This, I definitely need to try.

You’ve heard of Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Bikram, Hot Yoga, and maybe Kundalini…but now what might be my favorite is joining the group, Floating Yoga. Yoga done on a stand up paddle board. Swap that mat for a SUP and pinch me please. This sounds amazingly fun, and challenging.

There is one catch: You need to be at the Fairmount Orchid on the Big Island of Hawaii to participate…however, I feel this might be a trend on the rise.

Each morning at 7am (so the water is calm) instructor and SUP extraordinaire Donica Shouse, leads the class in the resort’s bay on paddle boards that are lightly weighted so there’s no risk of floating away during shavasana. The usual yoga poses- warrior one, two, upward and downward dog are now accompanied by the doggy paddle, or canon ball when balance is lost. I can’t think of a more fun and challenging workout, way to unwind, or spice up your weekly fitness routine. Plus a sea turtle gliding under the board to say G’day or a school of fish swimming by sure beats the smelly, hairy guy wearing only running shorts who usually is my scenery in class.

Watch the video, then book your ticket to the Big Island and check it out on your next vacation. Classes are $20, and you don’t need to be a guest at the resort. WhatSUP Yogi?
