DIY Ombre Button Down

I am a wee bit fascinated with shirts like this little soft & gorgeous one. A perfect, versatile coverup/beachy top that would get me out of my t-shirt addiction. However, I can’t pull the trigger to buy one. Luckily, all it took was a successful trip to Goodwill and experimenting with some bleach to make a little ombre button up of my own.

Here’s how.

Tools: 1 Lightweight button up shirt (preferably a solid darker color), bleach, bucket or large glass bowl, sink, and I recommend not wearing any extremely valuable clothes while doing this.

1: In your large bowl combine 2 cups of water with ¾ cup bleach.

2: dunk the shirt so only the bottom half is in this mixture. Let sit for 2-3 minutes

3: Remove the shirt and set aside in the sink (I left the dry part on the edge of the sink and the dunked part in the sink). Then add another ¾ cup of bleach to the bowl.

4: Dunk the shirt so only the bottom third is in the mixture. Let sit for 3-4 minutes

5: Remove the shirt and set aside in the sink. Then dump out your bowl, and add only straight up bleach to it, about ¾ to 1 cup (enough to dunk the very bottom part of the shirt in it

6: Dunk the very bottom quarter of the shirt in the bleach. Let sit for 5 minutes, or until you can see the fabric get significantly lighter.

7: Rinse thoroughly with water, and let the shirt dry.

8: Voilaaaaahhhhh! A new coverup for under $6.

**If you want your shirt to go to an actual white, you might want to try doing this DIY with RIT color remover instead of bleach. I haven’t tried it but thought of it after I was done. Typical.
