On a recent trip to Costco, I bought a big ol box of kiwis. Why? Because I love them. Also, they happen to be an under appreciated super food. Kind of like the Scottie Pippen of the produce section.
Here are a few health benefits and recipes utilizing my beloved fuzzy l’il fruit.
Kiwis are known to be effective against respiratory health problems like asthma (especially in kids), shortness of breath, and chronic cough. I swear, bronchitis loves my lungs, kiwis are here to end that relationship.
Low Glycemic fruit
The fiber in Kiwis helps your food move through the digestive track at an even pace. No rapid blood sugar spike or drop, just easy cruisin’. They are also safe for diabetics.
Natural Laxative, and Helps Relieve IBS
Say sayonara to Ex-Lax and G’day to some Kiwis. These suckers have a little bit of a laxative effect…and I had 4 or 5 today…hold on for a few minutes…
Carrots, you have some competition, and it’s kinda cuter looking than you are, and has just as much Leutin.
They Really Are a Super Fruit
Kiwis are loaded with antioxidants, Vitamin C, E, and A, potassium, magnesium, folate, polyphenols, copper, fiber (extra points in the fiber department if you eat the skin), and more. The only thing they are missing, is a cape.
So, now that you know all the health benefits, here are some ways to get them on yo’ belly.
Keep it Simple
Slice up and eat plain (or drizzle with honey and lime juice)
1 cup Guava juice (Or orange, pineapple, or mango will work too), 1 tbs lime juice, 4 kiwis, 6 oz greek yogurt, 1tbs honey. Combine in a blender. Blend until smooth. Chug it.
6 not too ripe kiwis, peeled and cubed, ½ cup diced mango, 3 tbs lime or lemon juice, 1 teaspoon sugar, ½ cup cilantro, ½ diced jalapeno, salt to taste. Combine in bowl, slather on fish or chicken, use as a dip, eat plain, whatever you like. It’s good.
Looks like it might be time to find a kiwi print bikini, or maybe, I’ll just start with painting my nails.
